Training and assessment for NSW heavy vehicle licences is conducted by our NSW RMS Accredited Trainers/Assessors and conducted under the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) system. Under this system individuals are able to be assessed by a private provider; you do not have to be assessed by the RMS.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO FIRST

Before you can attend a heavy vehicle driving course/ and assessment, you will need to complete the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) for the applicable licence class, complete an eyesight test and obtain the HVCBA booklets at a Motor Registry Office.

Medium Rigid Vehicle

Description: A motor vehicle with 2 axles and a GVM of more than 8 tonnes.

Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9 tonnes GVM.

Eligibility: Complete driver knowledge test, obtain HVCBA learner and guide book, have held your P1 or higher licence (not a learner or rider), for a minimum of 12 months.

Duration: See Note 1 below.

Outcome: Qualify for NSW driver licence class MR.

Heavy Rigid Vehicle

Description: Any motor vehicle with three axles and more than 8 tonnes GVM.

Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9 tonnes GVM.

Eligibility: Complete driver knowledge test, obtain HVCBA learner and guide book, have held your C, LR or MR licence (not a learner or rider), for a minimum of 2 years.

Duration: See Note 1 below.

Outcome: Qualify for NSW driver licence class HR.

Heavy Combination Vehicle

Description: Any semi-trailer or rigid vehicle towing a trailer with a GVM of more than 9 tonnes.

Eligibility: Complete driver knowledge test, obtain HVCBA learner and guide book, have held your MR or HR licence for at least one year. P1 and P2 licence holders cannot upgrade to this class.

Duration:

Outcome: Qualify for NSW driver licence class HC.

Light Rigid Vehicle

Description: Any motor vehicle more than 4.5 tonnes GVM bt no more than 8 tonnes GVM.

Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9 tonnes GVM.

Also includes any vehicle with a GVM of no more than 8 tonnes which carries more than 12 adults including the driver

Eligibility:
Complete driver knowledge test, obtain HVCBA learner and guide book, have held your P1 or higher licence (not a learner or rider), for a minimum of 12 months.

Duration: See Note 1 below.

Outcome: Qualify for NSW driver licence class LR.
